Position Summary

This Senior Assistant Attorney General position is in the Office of the Attorney General within the Civil Litigation Division, Complex Litigation Bureau in Tallahassee, Florida.

Qualifications

Admission to the Florida Bar and six (6) years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings. The required legal experience must be from the practice of law in a state or territory of the United States. Membership in good standing in another state Bar can substitute for the required admission to the Florida Bar provided that, pursuant to Rule 11-1.10 of the Rules Regulating the Florida Bar, the attorney applies for and obtains admission to the Florida Bar within 12 months of appointment to a position in this class.

The Work You Will Do

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

The Senior Assistant Attorney General prosecutes and defends civil litigation on behalf of state agencies and officials in all federal and state trial and appellate courts and administrative tribunals, as requested and as provided by law. The attorney in this position handles settlement negotiations, pleadings, discovery, motion practice, jury and non-jury trials, as well as post-trial and appellate practice. The position also requires the ability to research and work independently and involves travel in and out of state. The attorney in this position is responsible for cases involving constitutional law, civil rights, elections, environmental law, etc. Senior Assistant Attorneys General also provide guidance to the younger attorneys in the office and guidance to agency and official clients on policy and program issues that may be only indirectly related to a specific case.

The Senior Assistant Attorney General position requires a thorough working knowledge of rules of civil procedure, evidence and substantive law. This position also requires significant federal practice, but zero or limited experience in federal practice at the time of hiring is acceptable. The position requires the ability to research and draft motions, answers, replies, interrogatories, memoranda, briefs, opinions, orders and other miscellaneous pleadings and documents. In addition, the Senior Assistant Attorney General performs routine administrative matters including: supervising attorneys, legal assistants, paralegals, and interns; attending staff meetings; preparing travel vouchers, time records and case status reports; filing documents; assisting and advising entry-level attorneys; and responding to inquires from the public.

The Senior Assistant Attorney General is expected to maintain current expertise in areas of practice, including reading recent judicial decisions and case summaries and attending continuing legal education and other professional seminars, while contributing to the offices bank of legal briefs, memoranda, forms, and overall base of legal knowledge.
