Ecopetrol is currently exploring the opportunity to engage in the exploration and development of unconventional resources. By doing so, Ecopetrol will balance its upstream portfolio with short-term hydrocarbons and add diversification from a geographical and play perspective with access to light oil and gas. Moreover, engaging in unconventional opportunities outside of Colombia will allow Ecopetrol to learn the nuances of exploring and operating unconventional resources. Rodeo is a Joint Venture (JV) between Occidental Petroleum and Ecopetrol in the Midland Basin, Texas, United States to develop unconventional resources. Oxy will operate the holdings based on a field development plan agreed upon by both companies. Ecopetrol will actively engage in the operations through the management team to build a robust understanding of unconventionals and provide oversight to the operations. The Role The ECP Permian Reservoir Engineer will serve as a coordinator for subsurface development planning within Ecopetrol for the Rodeo joint venture. This individual will lead the planning process for horizontal wells in unconventional reservoirs, ensuring technical integration across teams, optimizing development strategies, and driving alignment with Rodeo’s operating partners. The role includes collaboration with Data Analytics, Field Development, and Subsurface teams to support optimized well spacing, machine learning models, performance diagnostics, and reserves forecasting. The Senior Associate will also contribute to the evaluation of new technologies and share key technical insights within Ecopetrol to advance its Unconventional business. The position will be located in Houston, Texas, United States, and will report to and be evaluated by the ECP Permian Reservoir Engineering Team Lead. Key Responsibilities Lead development planning for horizontal wells in unconventional reservoirs, with focus on optimizing spacing, sequencing, and landing zones. Apply best practices and advanced analytics, incorporating latest technologies to generate type curves and inform well spacing and development optimization, including “cube-style” developments. Conduct decline curve and productivity analysis by area, bench, and well type to support field development planning. Support economic modeling, reserves assessments, and updates to field development strategies. Monitor well and field performance to identify optimization opportunities, diagnose underperformance, and provide actionable recommendations. Act as the primary coordinator for subsurface development planning, ensuring alignment across internal teams and collaborating closely with the operating company and key stakeholders. Apply reservoir simulation as appropriate to enhance production forecasts and characterize uncertainty, particularly for infill development scenarios. Leverage third-party relationships to evaluate new technologies and workflows that enhance Subsurface Team capabilities. Collaborate with internal teams and external operating partners to align on development strategies and project execution. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in petroleum or chemical engineering Minimum of 8 years of reservoir engineering experience Proficient in the English language (written and oral); fluency in Spanish language desirable Deep Unconventional Subsurface understanding, including variables that impact deliverability and overall recovery (Primary/Secondary) Tools and Techniques/workflows to reduce subsurface uncertainty Highly proficient with Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) Understanding of Petrophysics, Geophysics and Geology fundamentals Understanding of Phase Behavior and how it relates to recovery Understanding of frac modeling techniques and theories/fundamentals Understanding of the fundamentals of artificial lift mechanisms Experience with reserve estimation techniques and knowledge of SEC/PRMS reserves guidelines Prior experience in data analytics and large data sets at and oil and gas operator Advanced working knowledge of statistics, machine learning & multivariate techniques Experience with ComboCurve and knowledge of financial analysis techniques Knowledge of third-party data source systems (IHS, DrillingInfo/Enverus, WoodMac, etc.) Excellent MS Excel skills & Spotfire / Power BI expertise preferred Candidate Profile Mid-level, high performing and/or high-potential employee (8-12 years of experience) Demonstrated ability to work with operators / partners / suppliers in prior assignments Flexibility to travel to the field as required as well as between Colombia and Texas Fluency in English and Spanish desirable Interest in pursuing longer-term career in Ecopetrol post-secondment and ability to demonstrate its values Strong interpersonal skills, confidence, and ability to work well with diverse personalities and work force Articulate, effective and persuasive in verbal and written communication Curious mind with an ability to ask great questions Thinks outside the box with a passion for exploring and building knowledge Resilient (adaptable and dynamic) Passion for knowledge transfer and people development Demonstrated ability to work with operators / partners / suppliers in prior assignments Drives for results that significantly impact company performance with a sense of urgency Embraces change and enjoys challenges Excellent organization and time management skills Ability to work effectively and coordinate activities across disciplines, both technical and support Team Spirit - Working with others towards achieving the goals of Ecopetrol Permian.
