Experience sports journalism at its core level at an award-winning daily newspaper south of Houston.
Our schools participate in all the major sports — football, basketball, and state championship-level spring sports — plus powerlifting, wrestling, golf, water polo and others that will provide you the chance to expand your toolkit while learning what you will need to build your sports journalism career.
You also will regularly craft personality features, contribute opinion columns and have the opportunity to flex your long-form writing chops through an array of glossy magazines and other specialty products.
This is a fantastic chance to build an impressive resume while polishing your gift for writing and fulfilling your love for sports.
The right candidate will have the core skills necessary — writing, reporting, factual accuracy and ability to nail deadlines — with bonus points for design aptitude, social media, podcasting and video.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE WILL: >> Have a basic understanding of the rules of journalism, including prioritizing accuracy, truth and fairness, and AP style.>> Have knowledge of newspaper design, including use of InDesign for publication production, or an aptitude and willingness to learn.>> Be handy with a camera, even if it’s the one on your smartphone.>> Have a keen curiosity about the community and a desire to share that curiosity with others.>> Have a basic knowledge of Texas high school sports.>> Have a good command of the English language and ability to explain issues in simple ways.>> Be willing to work some nights and weekends.
