GIS Technician

BB&E is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.

Position Summary

BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented GIS Technician to join our team to provide project delivery business process support services to the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Caribbean District (South Atlantic Division [SAA]) in Puerto Rico which is responsible for managing the planning, design, and construction of Civil Works, Military and Interagency and International Support (IIS) Projects throughout the Caribbean region. This role will focus on designing, developing, and maintaining GIS databases, conducting spatial analysis, and producing geospatial products that support the planning, design, and construction of projects throughout the Caribbean region.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • GIS Database Design and Maintenance
    1. Design, develop, and maintain complex GIS databases to store, manage, and retrieve geospatial data related to projects in the Caribbean region
    2. Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and usability of GIS data by implementing best practices in database management, data validation, and quality control
  • Data Analysis & Interpretation
    1. Analyze and interpret digital data sets, maps, aerial photography, and other source documents to extract meaningful geospatial information for use in project planning and execution
    2. Perform spatial analysis using GIS software to support project design, environmental studies, and other analyses required by project teams
    3. Conduct GIS data conversion and transformation to ensure compatibility between different data formats and systems
  • Cartographic Production & Presentation Materials
    1. Produce high-quality cartographic products, including maps, charts, and other visual presentations, to communicate geospatial information to stakeholders, project managers, and external partners
    2. Ensure that all cartography products meet project specifications and USACE guidelines
    3. Create presentation materials such as maps, 3D visualizations, and geospatial analyses for meetings, reports, and client presentations
  • Geospatial Data Integration & Support
    1. Combine geospatial data with other relevant project data to provide comprehensive mapping and analytical solutions for construction, planning, and design efforts
    2. Support the integration of GIS data into project management systems, ensuring that relevant information is accessible and actionable across various teams
  • Collaboration & Coordination
    1. Work closely with project managers, engineers, environmental specialists, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and deliver GIS solutions that support project goals
    2. Provide GIS technical support to project teams, helping to interpret and analyze spatial data to inform decision-making
Key Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain/maintain a NACI/CAC is required
  • Willingness to work in the Caribbean on USACE projects and interact with local teams, agencies, and contractors
  • Certifications in GIS technologies or related areas (such as ESRI ArcGIS certifications) are highly desirable
  • Knowledge and Competencies
    1. Proficiency in conducting spatial analysis and producing cartographic products for complex projects
    2. Understanding of GIS principles, concepts, and techniques including coordinating systems, transformations, and projections; digital data input methods including digitizing, scanning, coordinating geometry, and georeferencing; topological data models and relational databases
    3. Ability to produce clear, concise, and well-organized reports, maps, and presentations
    4. Attention to detail and the ability to ensure the accuracy and quality of geospatial data and deliverables
    5. Experience with remote sensing, satellite imagery analysis, or other geospatial technologies (LiDAR, UAV, etc.) is a plus
    6. Knowledge of environmental GIS applications and their use in sustainable project planning and construction
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex geospatial concepts to diverse audiences, including project stakeholders, engineers, and non-technical staff
  • Software: Proficiency using MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; capability and experience with geographic information systems (GIS) software, particularly ESRI ArcGIS, to create and maintain data, maps, and geospatial analyses are required ; experience with other GIS software platforms, such as QGIS, or other geospatial data management and analysis tools is preferred
  • Self-Starter: Highly motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines autonomously
Experience & Education
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a GIS Technician with hands-on experience in geospatial data management, analysis, and cartographic production is required ; experience working on large-scale projects in civil works, environmental consulting, or military infrastructure is preferred
  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, Environmental Science, or a related field from an ABET accredited university is required

  • Ability to stand/walk/climb/kneel/crouch and remain in a stationary position/sit at least 60% of the time
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, phone, etc.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms
  • Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to see details of objects that are less than a few feet away
  • Ability to understand the speech of another person, speak clearly so listeners can understand, and talk or hear both in person and by telephone

  • Work Environment : Must be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions; occasionally required to navigate rough terrain, work in confined spaces, and operate at heights
  • PPE & Safety: Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary; may encounter hazards or contaminants during work tasks
