What We’re Looking for in our New Chief People Officer

As Chief People Officer, you will leverage your knowledge of HR conventions, law, people management, and organizational development. You should have a track record of success in leading change, excellent judgment, and the ability to inspire others. A customer service mentality is essential, along with the ability to gain the trust of both our leaders and team members. You will handle sensitive issues with diplomacy and discretion and be a skilled trainer and coach. Required qualifications include a bachelor’s degree, 10+ years of experience in people management, and 5+ years in a leadership role. Preference will be given to candidates with HRCI or SHRM Certification and an advanced degree.

About the Chief People Officer Role

As the leader of our People Team, you will oversee the development and implementation of Henry Street’s next wave of people strategy initiatives, building on the work that has been done to develop and execute Henry Street’s 2023-2025 strategy, input from our recent culture survey, and our core organization values.

Your accountabilities will include:

People Strategy, Acquisition, and Development

  • People Strategy: Articulate a multi-year agenda for people policies and programs; Define, communicate, and nurture our culture; Collect feedback from team members on their alignment and engagement, and make working at Henry Street more meaningful and rewarding.
  • Talent Acquisition: Raise our reputation as a great place to work; Execute a sourcing, selecting, and onboarding strategy that generates a high-quality, diverse workforce.
  • People Development: Coach senior leaders on managing and developing their teams; Design and lead leadership development activities, including training, succession management, and building senior teams.

Operations and Administration

  • Operations: Oversee the implementation of all people policies and programs with supporting goals, objectives, and budget.
  • Administration: Ensure compliance with federal and state requirements and with Henry Street policies (conducting investigations, maintaining records, representing Henry Street at hearings).
  • Systems: Modernize and consolidate our systems and bring on new procedures and systems as needed to make us more effective and efficient.

Compensation, Benefits, and Employee Relations

  • Compensation: Manage salaries, including increases, promotions, and other compensation decisions; Develop compensation plan and benchmark pay with comparable organizations.
  • Benefits: Coordinate insurance brokers, insurance carriers, and pension administrator; Oversee group healthcare, retirement, and insurance negotiations.
  • Employee Relations: Cultivate a safe, fulfilling, and respectful work environment free from discrimination and harassment; Develop and institute diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; Investigate and resolve grievances and complaints.

Essential Physical Functions:

  • Ability to climb stairs.
  • Ability to work on the Lower East Side.
