Appraiser Trainee

Location: 315 Court Street, Clearwater, FL 33756

Schedule: Following the initial training period, up to 2 days per week work from home remote work is available.

The Pinellas County Property Appraiser is seeking applications for the position of Appraiser Trainee. The residential trainee position is field and office work of routine difficulty in the gathering of property data to assist the Property Appraiser's office in estimating residential property values for ad valorem purposes. Work involves measuring building structures and appurtenances, drawing sketches to scale, identifying structural features and characteristics, making quality judgments, performing sales verification, and recording descriptive data. This training position is for a period of up to two years, after which the incumbent may be promoted noncompetitively within the approved career ladder at the discretion of the Appointing Authority. This recruitment will prepare the incumbent for an Appraiser I position within the Residential Property department.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: YOU MAY NOT PERFORM OUTSIDE REAL ESTATE APPRAISAL, SALES OR CONSULTING WHILE EMPLOYED BY THE PINELLAS COUNTY PROPERTY APPRAISER.

What You Will Do

  • Delivers courteous, professional service to customers when communicating in orally or in writing.
  • Identifies and locates properties from subdivision plats, maps, and legal descriptions.
  • Accurately interprets and records parcel changes discovered via oblique and/or street level images.
  • Responds to building permits/CO's for new construction, alterations, additions and demolitions.
  • Provides accurate analysis in support of VAB preparation.
  • Delivers courteous, professional service to customers when communicating in orally or in writing.
  • Learns to accurately and efficiently collect, document, and record field data.

What You Need To Have

  • 2 years' experience in a Florida Property Appraiser's Office or other state tax assessor, or
  • Associate's Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, Real Estate Management or related field, or
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Public Administration, Real Estate Management or related field, or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
  • Must provide personal properly licensed and insured automobile transportation for the performance of fieldwork.
  • Must be capable of carrying and operating a hand-held computer weighing approximately 6 pounds for up to six hours a day in the field.
  • May be located in any of three locations: north, mid and south-county.
  • Must pass the Property Appraiser's math skills test, given after interview.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Experience with MS Office suite including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
  • Experience with technology including desktop.

Highly Desirable

  • Possession of a Florida State Certified Appraiser or Registered Trainee Appraiser license.
  • Experience in the appraisal of residential or tangible personal property.
  • Possession of a designation from a nationally recognized professional appraisal organization.
