GENERAL SUMMARY

The Academic and Career Success Advisor will work as a part of a dynamic team supporting student success at USF. This position will include providing first-year academic advising, career services support, academic coaching, learning accessibility accommodations, and other services to support the development and learning of all USF students. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in the areas of learning accessibility, academic advising, academic and career support, retention, and other related Academic Success Center services. The individual in this position reports directly to the Director of the Academic Success Center.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

Academic Success Services:

  • Maximize students’ ability to discover and achieve their academic, spiritual, social, and professional goals through the efficient delivery and management of services provided under the auspices of the Academic & Career Success Center, in alignment with the Christian mission of USF.
  • Impact overall student satisfaction, success, and retention by providing informed and industry best practices for academic support and advising, with a focus on enhancing the experience for online learners.
  • Ensure equal access to learning opportunities by implementing accommodations approved by the Director (e.g., exam coordination, note-takers, interpreters, audio books, assistive technology, etc.) for students who have documented disabilities, including advising prospective and current students of their rights and responsibilities under ADA and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • Administer CLEP, Math Placement, English Screening, and other placement exams, as needed.
  • Assist in retention outreach initiatives for early alerts and re-enrollment.

Teaching:

  • Teach sections of SDV100: The USF Experience, SDV200: Career Planning & Preparation, and other classes that may be developed and implemented by the ASC.
  • Create and deliver presentations and workshops about academic and career success, as needed.

Career Services:

  • Assist students with identifying their strengths, interests, and abilities and explain how these areas relate to majors and careers in order to move forward in selecting a major.
  • Coach students on job/internship search techniques, including networking, resume writing, cover letter development, and interview preparation.

General Responsibilities:

  • Maintain confidentiality in all areas of the Academic Success Center, including confidential records related to students’ academic performance, diagnosis, and utilization of services.
  • Represent the Academic Success Center on committees, task forces, and at campus events, as assigned.
  • Complies with all USF policies and regulations, and also with outside agencies' policies and regulations, including but not limited to Title IX, NCAA, NSIC, Department of Education, Clery Act, FERPA, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of Labor, and the Department of Justice.
  • Other job appropriate duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree is required in higher education, counseling, or related field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in higher education preferred, preferably in academic advising, academic support, and/or learning accessibility services.
  • Extensive knowledge of the college and university setting, its compliance requirements and regulations, is preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communications in person and via synchronous and asynchronous technologies; ability to speak and present to large and small groups of students, parents, prospective students and parents, faculty, staff and professional associations.
  • Record of progressive success in a professional work setting; demonstration of a strong work ethic that contributes to a strong team effort and departmental success
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact positively with students, faculty, staff, parents, and alums through telephone, text, and email.
  • Demonstrated success working independently and as part of a team meeting multiple priorities, deadlines, and overall goals.
  • Understanding of Federal and state legislation (e.g. Equal Employment Opportunity Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act), as well as professional ethical standards
  • Demonstration of Christian faith and understanding and support of Christian higher education.
  • Proficient with PC/Internet, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), telephone, copier, fax/scanner/printer
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a employment background check; ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds; ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods with frequent keyboard and computer use.
