Department Summary

The Center for Student Success & First-Year Experience (CSSFYE) is a multifaceted, student services operation that is dedicted to supporting University of Mississippi students. The Academic Advising unit within the CSSFYE provides holistic support to students served.

 

Academic Advisors guide students regarding curriculum, policies, resources, etc.

 

Examples of work include: 1:1 academic advising, teaching a first-year experience course, supporting all retention initiatives, etc.

Role Summary

Key responsibilities include academic advisement of students, proactive/reactive outreach, assist with various student support initiatives, teach a first-year experience course, support all retention initiatives, support second year students regardless of major, represent the Center at recruitment events, and assist at New Student Orientation, other duties as assigned. 

Examples of Work Performed

In a typical day an Academic Advisor I or II would:

  • Meet with students to discuss grades, degree plans, resources, etc.
  • Teach a course.
  • Attend various meetings.
  • Communicate with students, parents, and campus partners. 

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

1. Receives, processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
2.Serves as a main point of contact for students providing basic organizational information about educational options, academic requirements and institutional resources and addressing their needs.
3.Counsels students in identifying and assessing their interests, skills and values to match appropriate fields of study and career options and refers students to appropriate institutional resources.
4. Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records according to program policies.

Minimum Education/Experience

Academic Advisor I

Education:  Bachelor's Degree

Experience: No Experience Required

 

Academic Advisor II

Education:  Bachelor's Degree

Experience: (3) Three Years Experience

 

 

An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered for this role. Substitutions of the required experience or education will be assessed on a 1:1 substitution basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters Degree preferred
